Seeking a proactive and innovative librarian to serve as director for new Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in School Librarianship.
Full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position reporting to the Associate Dean for Public Services.

Responsibilities: The management of all aspects of the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in School Librarianship. Teaching courses in the program. Key working relationships on campus include those with the Department of Curriculum & Instruction and the Graduate School. The Director, as a member of Milner Library's Public Services Division, participates in collection development, reference and instruction activities. Shares in library and university governance; and pursues scholarship and service to fulfill tenure requirements.

Qualifications required: ALA-accredited master's; second advanced degree required for tenure; experience in a school library setting; excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills Also preferred: knowledge of instructional design and assessment; ability to teach in an online environment; capacity to work with a wide variety of individual and organizational constituents, ranging from students to academic departments to the State Board of Education

Salary and benefits: $60,000 as assistant professor, negotiable depending on education and qualifications. 24 days of vacation and 11 paid holidays per year.

The Washington Center is pleased to announce an opportunity for students to participate in a fully-funded (plus stipend) internship program with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Selected students will have the opportunity to intern for FAA offices and participate in an experiential training program. Student participants will gain relevant skills and knowledge, explore career options within the Department of Transportation and other federal agencies, and develop a greater awareness of the role of the federal government. Internship sites for the fall 2009 semester are in Washington , D.C.

Qualifications

Be a currently enrolled student in an accredited college or university
Be of junior status or above (60 academic credit hours) at the time of the internship
Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
Be a U.S. citizen
Complete all components of the application packet

Selected students will receive The Washington Center program fee and housing fee at no charge and receive a substantial weekly stipend. Students have the option of living in fully-furnished housing facilities within blocks of the DC metro line. If students choose not to live in Washington Center provided housing, the stipend is increased. All stipends are based on a 36 hour work week and payroll is distributed on the 15th and 30th of each month. The Washington Center is the official employer and must have the I-9 and W-4 tax forms on file. Direct deposit is available.

Summary Description of Position:
The Chicago Project for Violence Prevention is working with community based organizations to implement Operation CeaseFire. CeaseFire is a coordinated strategy to address shootings in Chicago. Skilled Outreach Workers are the implementers of this strategy, providing intervention, prevention, and support services for high- risk individuals in the neighborhoods.

Duties Include:
• Outreach to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with youth, residents, CAPS, businesses, and community groups.
• Identification of youth who are gang members and those at-risk for joining gangs and intervening in their lives through case management to aid in solving current problems and preventing future ones.
• Serving as linkages and support for individuals to enhance their assistance and use of opportunities and programs in the community (job programs, GED, drug treatment, and mentoring).
• Advocating for youth through court testimonies, when necessary.
• Organizing responses to shootings and increasing visibility when shootings/killings take place (developing networks with other outreach program workers to coordinate an inclusive and strategic response).
• Investigating causes of shootings/killings to assist in mediating situations and preventing retaliation between individuals and groups (working with the community, outreach programs and CPD to gain information that may be helpful in preventing additional killings).
• Identification and diffusing “hot spots” for shootings and violence (conducting eyeball surveys with residents and CBOs to identify areas frequented by potential offenders).
• Attending and participating in meetings with law enforcement, community outreach workers, prosecution, probation, and agencies providing opportunities, to discuss recent situations and coordinate efforts collectively to stop the killing.
• Responding to shootings in other communities, when necessary.
• Documenting detailed client case notes and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Extensive experience working with at-risk youth and gang members
• Excellent communication skills
• Experience or training in crisis intervention
• Knowledge of Chicago communities
• Valid Illinois driver’s license, insurance, and good driving record
